A New Adventure Begins
There'n Back RV
There'n Back our RV begins another new adventure for us. Vivian and I have talked about getting a motor home for a number of years. We planned on getting one next year, once we had retired and returned from our trip to Europe. In September this year we were lucky enough to get to attend my niece Bonnie and Mike's wedding in Florida. We had a great time with the whole family and we got to know Mike which was a real pleasure.

Viv and I decided to have a look at motor homes while we were there. We went over to Tampa to "Lazydays" which is the largest RV dealer in the USA. We saw a number of nice units there but nothing that turned our crank. We decided to stop and look at one more unit, a private sale, on the way back, which I had found on the internet. And here we are. A year ahead of time and very happy with our purchase.

My friend Jukka was coming here from Vancouver and we had planned to wander around the Eastern USA. As it turned out, it worked out so that we could do that and pick up the motor home.

So Jukka and I set out on Oct 19 for the south. We drove from Ottawa to Philadelphia the first day and stayed at a Comfort Inn right downtown under the Benjamin Franklin bridge.

One night there and then we were off to Atlantic City. We stopped in Cape May and had a look around and ended up taking the ferry from there when we left Atlantic City.

We stayed at a very reasonably priced motel. So reasonably priced that it included bed bugs. We were lucky not to pick up any to take on in our travels but I can say I won't be staying there again. (Rodway Inn). Anyways we had a nice time in Atlantic City and stayed two nights. We stayed right across from the Resorts Casino.

Of course we had to walk along the famous Boardwalk.

And yes, we did go into the odd Casino. I must say I was very lucky on both nights we went into the casino. I am now afraid to ever go back to a casino because I know it is all down hill from here.

While we were there we got word that the motor home was ready for pick up, so we headed for Georgia where we were to meet the owner. We spent a nice night at a Holiday Inn in Valdosta, Georgia and the next morning met the owner and went to a Notary to sign all the papers. By noon we were ready to roll and off we went.

The Driver

So we drove for about 2 hours that day and stayed in a little campground called Southern Gates RV Park in Arabi Georgia. The owners were very helpful getting us parked. HOWEVER, we stopped for the night on top of an ant colony and they decided it was time to move north. They hitched a ride and it took Jukka and I three days to get rid of all the little buggers.

We went on to Chattanooga the next day and stayed in a nice campground called Best Holiday RV. It sure is worth while belonging to Passport America as you get to camp Sunday to Thursday for half price. That helps to make it a little easier when you pull in for fuel. It is getting 5.8 miles to the gallon or with fuel at around $3 average fifty cents a mile.

We went on to the Great Smoky Mountains and really enjoyed the beautiful scenery. I don't have any decent pictures of it. We did find the town a bit of a tourist eye sore but the mountains are beautiful and it will be a future destination for my photography.

When we were traveling we took our time and stopped when we wanted to at rest stops. It was nice to pull in, make a sandwich, and then off you go again.

The Rig

There is no question that this is a big rig. I enjoyed driving it and it handles well. When I passed a truck it didn't move the unit at all. When it was really windy you could feel it but it is such a heavy rig it doesn't move around much. I found myself looking down and finding I was doing 75. Normally I drove it at 65. The back up camera is useful to see that you are clear to pull out or back in. The side cameras help with that too. Here is the comparison of the van and the motor home.

We went on to the Sanity Protest in Washington DC which was a lot of fun. The costumes and the signs were great. Lots of people (best estimate I saw was 250,000 people).

We then left and went to Mexico (New York) for 1 night then across the boarder (with no real trouble) and home

I am now in the process of having it meet Canadian standards and then in early December I will be off again. I am planning on heading for New Orleans then across Texas and end up into Las Vegas just before Xmas. Vivian is going to fly down to Las Vegas for Xmas and we will then go on to Arizona. we are hoping that our friends Andy and Hannah will be going down to Vegas at Xmas and we will spend a couple days together in Vegas.

Kimberly, my daughter who lives in London, England is home to Toronto for the holidays and is going to fly down to Arizona for three days to join us. Then Viv will fly back home Jan 2, 2011. I am really looking forward to that. After that I think I will head for California for awhile then back to Canada in Feb.

Here are the States we have made it to so far in our Travel Supreme. I have been to many more states but will only record the ones visited in the Motor Home.
